Dynamic Interior Design for Class at Learning Institute

In today’s world, education has become a fast-paced industry. The students also tend to be more diverse since they come from a completely different generation (the Gen Y). To keep up with this change, the classrooms and other learning facilities configuration have to be multi-functional. The “conventional” classrooms with rows of desks and fixed wall whiteboard just create a barrier for active learning.

Instead of stiff classrooms, it’s better to provide classrooms that provide some spaces for collaboration and communication of ideas. They should also be designed to support the dynamic of quick transitions among multiple courses and also teaching modes.

It can be achieved if the movement of students is not limited. When students can move easily, they will be more comfortable, collaborative, and engaged in class activities.

All of this is the main goal behind the Prasetiya Mulya TB Simatupang project. This project aims to revamp the existing design to adjust with the current education culture which is more dynamic and encouraging communication of ideas among the students. It also intends to enhance proper visitor experience which is not catered by the existing design.

Highstreet was chosen as the portfolio in interior design is wide-ranging, from institutional to the hospitality industry. The choice is also supported by the prestigious accolades such as Merit Award from BCI Asia Awards.

Project description

Prasetiya Mulya is one of the most prestigious Business Schools in Indonesia. The campus always strives to follow the dynamic of education culture. For this project, they want to revamp their building to adjust to the current education culture, which is more dynamic and encouraging communication of ideas.

The interior design for this 2.418 m2 project is inspired by the flow of information and the ever-growing mindset of the business world. It means that the design is enhancing the flow of movement—which becomes the key to active learning.

For classrooms, it is projected to stay away from the conservative classroom where the lecturer and whiteboard are fixed to one corner of the room only. It can be seen from the formation of the desks. When conservative classrooms have rows of desks, Prasetiya Mulya’s classrooms have such unique formation that allows students to be more active in class.  

Aside from classrooms, Prasetiya Mulya also tries to enhance proper visitor experience without being catered by the existing design. For the main lobby, it is designed to have a better flow. Wood-patterned panels and artificial plants are used to give a warmer ambiance for the visitors.

Project challenges

Revamping an existing design is obviously not a simple task. The designer must fathom the existing design to pick out which one that can be maintained and not. It also happens with Prasetiya Mulya TB Simatupang project. Some parts of the campus already suit the current idea while some are not.

Staying away from the conservative design for the classroom is another challenge. Highstreet must come with a brand new concept which follows the dynamic rhythm of learning. It means that the interior design for the classrooms should aware that students need more space to support their movement and convenience while learning.

To answer these challenges, we bring a concept that is inspired by the flow of information and ever-growing mindset of the business world. With this concept, the classrooms and any other spaces are more conveniences for students, lecturers, and also visitors.
